Tips For Packing Your Most Fragile Items

Posted on: 21 February 2020

Have an upcoming move and need to pack everything up? If so, you likely have some fragile items that need some special care. Here are some tips for getting your fragile belongings to your new place in one piece.

Dishware

The key to packing your dishware properly is to use the right kind of supplies. If you try to get by with doing things haphazardly, you'll likely break some dishware in transit. You should try to get a specialty box designed specifically for moving dishware, which is often sold at truck rental facilities that carry moving supplies. If that is not an option, you'll need to get some small boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper.

Create a soft base for the plates by crumpling up packing paper. Then place each plate horizontally in the box. Use a layer of padding between each plate so that they are not touching each other, such as a layer of bubble wrap or even a piece of cardboard. Do not pack the dishes to the very top of the box, since you should leave room for a layer of packing material to cushion the top of the box.

Televisions

Your big-screen television may be one of the most expensive electronic devices in your home, and it has a very big screen that has the potential to become damaged in transit. Start by removing call cables that are sticking out of the television, since there is a potential for cords to break off in their ports if they take a bad bump. Protect the screen by placing a piece of cardboard on the screen, which can be done by cutting up a large box and securing it to the screen with tape. Wrap the television with a moving blanket, and secure the blanket to the TV with plastic wrap. This will give your TV the best chance of not being broken.

Glass Inserts

Anything that has a glass insert for a shelf or tabletop will need the glass removed and wrapped individually to ensure that they do not break. For example, glass shelves of a china cabinet can be removed and wrapped with bubble wrap. Consider using a specialty box for moving picture frames and mirrors if it is the approximate size of the piece of glass you are trying to protect.
