Organizing Things In Storage Units

Posted on: 9 January 2018

Once you have decided to rent a storage unit, you shouldn't just throw your boxes and items into the unit. You need to organize the items to maximize the use of the available space and make retrieval easy. Here are some organizational tips to keep in mind:

Don't Mix Up Items in Storage Boxes

Storing similar items in the same boxes is the best way to ensure that you can find all of them easily when you come for the retrieval. Imagine finding half of a pair of shoes in one box and not knowing where the other pair is. Avoid such complications by putting the shoes together, utensils together, books together et cetera etc; don't mix up books and shoes.

Place Similar or Complimentary Boxes Next To Each Other

The first thing is to categorize the items so that you can place their boxes next to each other in the storage room. For example, you can place all kitchen appliances in one place, place the utensils next to them, and then the kitchen storage cupboards next. This is useful because when you come for retrieval, you are likely to come for similar items at the same time. You don't want to store your kitchen utensils next to the toys so that when you come for kitchen things, you have to rummage through the whole storage unit to find all of them.

Label the Boxes

Even after putting similar items in the same boxes, you can still have a hard time with the retrieval if you don't know which boxes contain which items. Fortunately, labeling the boxes easily gets rid of the problem. Make sure you use a marker that won't fade fast and label at least two sides of each box, and the top, so that you don't have to turn a box around to read its label.

Place Frequently Accessed Items in the Front

If you are planning to store lots of items in the same storage unit, then it's possible that you will be retrieving them at different intervals. In that case, place the frequently retrieved boxes towards the front of the storage unit so that you don't have to go all the way to the back to get an item each time you come to the unit.

Keep an Inventory of Stored Items

Lastly, keep an inventory of all your items in your storage unit, especially if the items are going to be there for the long term. You shouldn't waste time driving to the storage facility and rummaging through the boxes only to realize that the item you are looking for isn't there because you had loaned it out to a friend a couple of months before.
