When it comes to packing and getting ready for a move, your home office can present some challenges you won't find in other rooms of your home. Use the following guide to help prepare your home office for a move.
Use File Boxes
Filing cabinets weighed down by paperwork can be difficult for your moving company to transport out of your home, particularly if your office is located in the basement or second story of your home. Use file boxes to sort and organize your paperwork for your move, and label each box clearly with the contents contained inside. This may mean using one box for each drawer so the files can be placed in the appropriate cabinet when you unpack, or it may simply mean indicating which part of the alphabet is packed into each box. Color-Code Wires And Cords
As you disconnect cords and cables from your computer, fax machine, printer, and other office electronics, take the time to color-code each cord. Assign a color to each device, and use colored rubber bands or ties to secure the cords and cables. This will help make it easier to set up your home office equipment when you are ready to unpack in your new home. You can also use color-coded stickers for small office equipment, such as mice and keyboards, if you have more than one computer in the home office.
Use Small Boxes For Books
Books, binders, and notebooks can weigh down large boxes, making them difficult to carry. Instead, use lots of smaller boxes to make these items easier to move. Organize items by type, such as binders in one group of boxes and notebooks and memo pads in another. Use the same approach for heavy office supplies. For example, place reams of paper in small boxes for easy moving.
Disassemble RTA Furniture
Ready-to-assemble furniture, or RTA furniture, can take up lots of space in the moving truck. To maximize space, disassemble these items before the move. Label each piece to make reassembly easy. For example, label each leg of a desk with the side it goes on, left or right, to make sure you don't get halfway through reassembly to find that you've put the wrong pieces together.
